The Art of Connecting is rethinking the risk

By Jason Cook, VP, BT Americas.

We have a long history of innovation in security and telecommunications, and we’re bringing the culmination of that experience to the RSA Conference 2016.

A rich security heritage.

I’m proud to be a part of a company that has such a rich history when it comes to telecommunications and security. During the Second World War, Tommy Flowers, an engineer for the General Post Office (part of which eventually became BT), developed the world’s first programmable electronic computer, Colossus. This computer eventually helped to decode German messages at Bletchley Park. Fast-forward to today, and we’re securing the likes of NATO and the Olympic Games against cyber threats.

This heritage is part of why I believe we’re the security industry’s best-kept secret.

The cumulative effect of collaboration.

I also think that much of our success when it comes to security is down to collaboration. This means sharing threat intelligence with our partners and peers, in order to keep up with cyber criminals (who are also collaborating via the Dark Web). It’s for this reason that I strongly believe that, in the security world, 1+1=3 — partnering delivers a substantial benefit, more so than two vendors going it alone. In fact, we’re so confident in the fruits of our collaboration, that we’re proud to drink our own champagne. That is, we use the very security solutions that we sell, to protect our own network (which spans 170 countries).

It’s a culmination of all these things — the history, the collaboration and our experience in securing our own network — that we’re bringing to the table at this year’s RSA conference.

At booth 707, we’ll be sharing and demonstrating our security knowledge, products and services.

  • Stay secure with the Cloud of Clouds. As a cloud integrator, we’ll show you how to stay secure while using a complex web of cloud services. We’ll demonstrate Assure Cloud Identity, showing how it can strengthen your defence by protecting your users’ identities in the cloud.
  • Keep ahead of threats with visual analytics and Big Data. We’ll demonstrate how Assure Cyber gives you a complete view of the threat-landscape — using extensive security monitoring and analysis to protect you from evolving security threats.
  • Keep an eye on everything that happens in your network. Assure Threat Monitoring gives you a bird’s-eye-view of your network. That way, any suspicious activity can be spotted and dealt with as quickly as possible.

On top of showcasing our security portfolio, we’ll also have:

  • a phone booth featuring a highly sophisticated voice offering
  • Packetwars™ — watch two teams compete in an intense battle of hacking skills
  • a book signing from Craig Smith, author of the Car Hacker’s Handbook — if you’re curious about automotive security and have the urge to hack a vehicle, you’ll find it well worth a read.

I hope you can make it over to our booth at the event. It’s there that you’ll meet the experts responsible for keeping our networks secure and discover why we’re security’s best-kept secret.

We’re in San Francisco from 29 February to 4 March for RSA 2016. Join us in the South Hall at booth 707 to discover how we can help protect you from evolving security threats. Our booth becomes a battlefield for Packetwars™ during the conference. You can hear from BT Americas’ CTO Konstantinos Karagiannis on Wednesday 2 March at 11:30am, in a session discussing ‘The Rise of the Hacking Machines’. Also, Craig Smith will be signing copies of his newly-revised book, The Car Hacker’s Handbook, at our stand on Tuesday, 1 March.
